  Smoking

Since 1939, numerous studies have been conducted to determine whether smoking is a health hazard. The trend of the evidence has been consistent and indicates that there is a serious health risk. Research teams have conducted studies that show beyond all reasonable doubt that tobacco smoking is associated with a shortened life expectancy.

Cigarette smoking is believed by most research workers in this field to be an important factor in the development of cancer of the lungs and cancer of the throat and is believed to be related to cancer of some other organs of the body. Male cigarette smokers have a higher death rate from heart disease than non-smoking male s. Female smokers are thought to be less affected because they do not breathe in the smoke so dee*.

Apart from statistics, it might be helpful to look at what smoking tobacco does to the human body. Smoke is a mixture of gases, vaporized chemicals, minute particles of ash and other solids. There is also nicotine, which is powerful poison, and black tar. As smoke is breathed in, all those components form deposits on the membranes of the lungs. One point of concentration is where the air tube and bronchus divides. Most lung cancer begins at this point.

Filters and low tar tobacco are claimed to make smoking to some extent safer, but they can only slightly reduce, not eliminate the hazards.

1). It is easy to determine whether smoking is hazardous. -W

  2). Smoking reduces one’s life expectancy. -R

3). Smoking may induce lung cancer. -R

4). There is evidence that smoking is responsible for breast cancer. -N

5). Male smokers have a lower death rate from heart disease than female smokers. -W

  6). Nicotine is poisonous. -R

7). Filters and low tar tobacco make smoking safe. -W

  New Product Will Save Lives

Drinking water that looks clean may still contain bugs (虫子), which can cause illness. A small company called Genera Technologies has produced a testing method in three stages, which shows whether water is safe. The new test shows if water needs chemicals added to it, to destroy anything harmful. It was invented by scientist Dr. Adrian Parton, who started Genera five years ago. He and his employees have developed the test together with a British water company.

Andy Headland, Genera"s marketing director, recently presented the test at a conference in the USA and forecasted good American sales for it. Genera has already sold 11 of its tests at $42,500 a time in the UK and has a further four on order. It expects to sell another 25 tests before the end of March. The company says it is the only test in the UK to be approved by the government.

Merchant and passenger ships are generally required to have a life preserver for every person aboard and in many cases, a certain percentage of smaller sizes for children. According to United States requirements, life preservers must design, reversible capable of being quickly adjusted to fit the uninitiated individual, and must be so designed as to support the wearer in the water in an upright or slightly backward position.

Sufficient buoyancy(浮力) to support the wearer should be retained by the life preserver after 48 hours in the water, and it should be reliable even after long period of storage. Thus it should be made of materials resistant to sunlight, gasoline, and oils, and it should be not easily set on fire.?The position in which the life preserver will support a person who jumps or falls into the water is most important, as is its tendency to turn the wearer in the water from a face-down position to an upright or slightly backward position, with his face clear of the water, even when the wearer is exhausted or unconscious.

The method of adjustment to the body should be simple, and self-evident to uninitiated persons even in the dark under the confused conditions, which follow a disaster. Thus, the life be reversible that it is nearly impossible to get it on wrong. Catches, straps, and ties should be kept to a minimum. In addition, the life preserver must be adjustable to the wide variety of shapes and sizes of wearers, since this greatly affects the position of floating and the self-righting qualities. A suitable life also be comfortable to wear at all times, in and out of the water, not so heavy as to encourage to take it off on shipboard while the ship is in danger, nor so burdensome that it hinders a person in the water while trying to swim.

  1. The passage is mainly about____.

  A) the uses of life preservers

  B) the design of life preservers

  C) the materials for life preservers

  D) the buoyancy of life preservers

  2. According to the passage, a life be first of all ____.

  A) adjustable B) comfortable C) self-evident D) self-righting

  3. United States Coast Guard does NOT require the life preserver to be made ____.

  A) with as few strings as possible

  B) capable of being worn on both sides

  C) according to each wearer"s size

  D) comfortable and light to wear

  4. By “the uninitiated individual” (Para. 1, Line. 4) the author refers to the person ____.

  A) who has not been instructed how to use a life preserver

  B) who has a little experience in using a life preserver

  C) who uses a life preserver without permission

  D) who becomes nervous before a disaster

  5. What would happen if a person were supported by the life preserver in a wrong position?

  A) The waves would move him backwards.

  B) The water would choke him.

  C) He would immediately sink to the bottom.

  D) He would be exhausted or unconscious.

  4. A。“the uninitiated individual”作者指的是不知道怎么使用救生衣的人。语义指代题。根据文章最后一段第一句,我们可推出“the uninitiated individual”就是指的那些不知道怎么使用救生衣的人。故A是正确选项。

  5. D。如果一个人没有正确使用救生衣,就会发生什么?细节辨别题。第三段第一句后半句中a face-down position和本题中的 in a wrong position相对应。

  Compound dictation

We"re now witnessing the emergence of the advanced economy based on information and knowledge. Physical labor, raw materials and capital

key ingredients in the creation of wealth. Now the vital raw material in our economy is knowledge. Tomorrow"s wealth depends on the development and exchange of knowledge. And individuals entering the work force offer their knowledge, not their muscles. Knowledge workers get paid for their education and their ability to learn. Knowledge workers engage in mind work. They deal with symbols, words, figures, and data.

What does all this mean for you?

As a future knowledge worker, you can expect to be generating, processing as well as exchanging information. Currently, three out of four jobs involve some form of mind work. And that number will increase shar* in the future. Management and employees alike will be making decisions in such areas as product development, quality control, and customer satisfaction.

In the new world of work, you can look forward to being in constant training to acquire new skills that will help you keep up with improved technologies and procedures.

You can also expect to be taking greater control of your career. Gone are the nine to five jobs, lifetime security, predictable promotions, and even the conventional workplace as you"re familiar with. Don"t expect the companies will provide you with a clearly defined career path, and don"t wait for some one to empower you. You have to empower yourself.

We are innately social animals and we can use that to our advantage.

IF YOU made a New Year"s resolution and are already having trouble sticking to it, don"t be too hard on yourself. It is not just a question of self will. Recent research shows that our behaviors and habits are more strongly influenced by friends and relatives than we might imagine. Furthermore, it seems that behaviors, ill-health and even moods pass through friendship networks across several degrees of separation, and we are almost bound to "catch" them

These findings have two important implications. The first is for public health. Governments tend to tackle issues such as smoking, alcoholism and unhealthy eating by focusing on individual behavior. Health campaigns could be much more effective if they accounted for the fact that society is not atomized. Behaviors are determined to a great extent by what others are doing. One idea is to “seed” health massages in small groups of peers, in expectation that the information will then cascade through the network. What is also clear is that many medical treatments look much more cost-effective when considering that a person’s illness— and likewise his wellness—has a knock-on effect on the health of those around him.

The second implication is for one’s view of human nature and autonomy. People like to think they are solely responsible for their actions, and that they are in control of their lives. This is largely an illusion. People are innately social animals, so it is hard to resist being influenced by others. However, by understanding one’s limitations and the social dimension to human behavior one can turn this to his advantage. Why not team up with friends and make a resolution together? You may find you are more successful.

  36. According to the author, one possible reason that people that fail to stick to their new year’s resolutions is that .

  A. they lack the willpower

  B. they are too hard on themselves

  C. they are influenced by friends and relatives

  D. everyone has trouble sticking to them

  37. What does the author mean by saying “society is not atomized” (Para.3, line. 3)?

  A. Society is a collection of individuals

  B. Society encourages individuality and separation.

  C. Society is made up of independent individuals.

  D. In society, individuals are closely interdependent.

  38. One of the implications for public health is that medical treatment can be more effective by

  A. realizing a patient’s behavior and moods will influence other patient’s health

  B. focusing on each patient’s behavior

  C. spreading the message in a group

  D. expecting medical information will go from patient to patient

  39. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .

  A. behavior is determined by one’s peer group

  B. people can acknowledge their friends’ influence and use it to their advantage

  C. people are social animals, so they cannot avoid the influence of others

  D. people can be more responsible for their actions if they can control their lives

  40. The passage is mainly about .

  A. how to stick to one’s New Year’s resolution

  B. how to influence friends’ behavior and moods

  C. how to deal with health and social problems

  D. how strongly human beings influence each other

In The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams imagined a small yellow fish, called a Babel fish. When popped into one’s ear, it would use brainwave energy, unconscious mental frequencies, and something called a “telepathic matrix” to achieve real-time language interpretation, making conversations with aliens effortless. Well, it is not yellow, and it does not fit in one’s ear, but US soldiers in Iraq are using a device that could become a universal interpreter.

The soldiers use a system called IraqComm, developed by SRI international in Menlo Park, California, which consists of a laptop loaded with speech recognition and translation software. Speak into the microphone in Arabic and the software turns the phrases into written Arabic, before translating it into English. After the person has finished talking, a com*r speaks the translation.

IraqComm’s software, and other programs like it, learned to translate much as a person would— by studying conversations. The software searches for statistical connections between a series of Arabic statements and English translations. For example, when the Arabic word “haar” appears, so does the word “hot” in the English version (the correct translation). If this occurs frequently enough, the program concludes that they mean the same thing. Given enough examples, the software can learn grammar too. A similar system running on a hand-held PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), called the speachalator, was developed at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Do not expect these programs to cope with free-flowing language just yet. The IraqComm works well because it focuses on around 50,000 words soldiers need. The broader the subject matter, the harder it becomes for the software to distinguish the alternate meanings required in different contexts. “We’ll get there,” says SRI’s Kristin Precoda.

  36. In the first paragraph, the yellow fish is mentioned to .

  A. draw the reader’s attention to IraqComm

  B. explain how it communicates with aliens

  C. explain how it interprets the language

  D. show it is imaginary from science fiction

  37. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a necessary part for IraqComm?

  A. A com*r.

  B. Speech recognition and translation software.

  C. A microphone.

  D. A language processing system.

  38. What does the passage indicate about IraqComm?

  A. IraqComm can translate language as well as a person could.

  B. IraqComm can learn grammar with enough examples.

  C. IraqComm can understand conversation.

  D. IraqComm can translate any language.

  39. What does the author think about the interpretation programs?

  A. In the future, interpretation programs will not deal with free-flowing language.

  B. Interpretation programs work well in different context.

  C. IraqComm works well because it only translates a certain number of words.

  D. Although there is limitation to interpretation programs, it will translate any language in the future.

  40. By saying “we’ll get there” (Para. 4, line. 5), Kristin Precoda implies .

  A. the programs can translate any free-flowing language

  B. the programs will translate more than 50,000 words

  C. the programs can deal with broader subject

  D. the programs can choose the exact meaning of words in different contexts.

Crude oil and gold prices surged to fresh highs yesterday amid renewed dollar weakness as investors sought refuge from a second wave of credit turmoil.

West Texas Intermediate jumped more than $3 to a nominal record of $97.07 a barrel and traders warned it might test the $100-a-barrel level as soon as today if US crude oil inventories show another weekly decline.

The price jump was helped by a bullish report from the Energy Information Administration, the statistical arm of the US Energy Department, warning that “tight fundamentals” would continue to push up oil prices.

The EIA forecast that crude oil prices would “exceed $80 per barrel over the next several months” and trade above $75 a barrel in 2008 as “global oil markets will likely remain stretched.” It said the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries would need to add another 700,000 barrels a day on top of its current production increase of 500,000 b/d to balance the market through the first quarter of 2008.

The cost of using options contracts to insure against crude oil trading at $100 in a year’s time surged to $4.15 per barrel, up almost 70 per cent since the end of October.

The combination of strong crude oil prices and a weakening dollar boosted gold prices to a fresh 28-year high of $824.3 an ounce, just below its all-time high of $850 reached in January 1980.

Precious metals traders said investors were adding to their gold positions – no one was selling. David Holmes, head of precious metals at Dresdner Kleinwort in London, said a rise to $850 was “very much on the cards”.

John Reade, head of metals strategy at UBS in London, upgraded its one-month gold forecast to an “inevitable” $850 an ounce.

The secret of being a saint

Once upon a time there lived in a country a do-gooder. The king was very appreciative of his deeds and decided to honour him as a saint by a decree. On the saint"s eightieth birthday, the king was invited to his birthday celerbration. He brought with him a painter so as to do a picture of the kindly saint as a paragon for his countrymen.

When the feast is over all the guests were asked to have a look at the picture. To their great surprise, when the picture was shown, what they saw was not a kind but a ruthless and cruel look. The king was very angry at seeing this and ordered his men to beat the painter.

Upon hearing the noise, the saint rushed to the scene to have a look at the picture. After viewing it, the saint knelt down and said, "your majesty, the person in the picture is none other than me." Why?" said the king, dumbfounded. "This has been the very person whom I have never wanted to be."

In this world, there are no naturally born saints; only those who can do self-criticism and sel-examination, can become saints.
